Age Spots

Age spots, or liver spots, are small brown lesions that tend to appear on the hands, face, chest, and back as a person grows older. They are also known as lentigines. Although they are not dangerous, age spots can detract from a person's appearance. It should be noted that age spots are small, brown, and flat with rounded edges. Darker areas or spots with irregular borders should be examined by a physician to ensure that they are not cancerous.

Age Spot Removal

In the past, it was difficult for a doctor to remove age spots without damaging the surrounding skin; today, lasers have made the process safer and more effective. In addition, laser removal involves little discomfort and is considered to be quite safe. Laser surgery is generally bloodless and has a quick recovery time. Laser age spot removal is an outpatient procedure. One treatment is usually sufficient, but several may be used if necessary. The most common type of laser used for removing age spots is the Diode laser.

After the Treatment

Recovery time after laser age spot removal is relatively quick. Most patients are able to return immediately to their normal activities. The procedure does not require anesthesia, and most patients will heal quickly. Many experience little or no downtime after the procedure. Most people find that their age spots respond well to laser treatment.

Health Concerns

Laser age spot removal is considered to be a safe. There is usually no blood or scarring and very little damage to the surrounding skin. In rare cases, there may be some change in skin pigmentation. This usually, though not always, fades with time. Some patients may need a second or third treatment before the age spot is completely removed
